Analytical assessment of nonlinear propagation effects: Finding an equivalent single-span system

In recent years, the upgrade of the existing optical networks has become of concern and many works dealing with high spectral efficiency systems have been published. However, neither an accurate description of the impairments due to the nonlinear effects nor the theoretical capacity of these dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems have been available up to now.


The lack of an appropriate analytical model is mainly due to the mathematical complexity of the nonlinear transmissions. There exist simulation tools that provide numerical solutions of the problem but they cannot provide some general rules or models describing DWDM transmissions and thus are only used to optimise a given system.

The goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of what actually occurs during a DWDM transmission. A top-down approach (i.e. a high-level analysis) has to be proposed in order to define a set of fundamental rules. This set of rules should cover a large range of areas (e.g. modulation format, spectral efficiency, dispersion maps, amplification…) and should be reinterpreted as design guidance.
